Kiran gripped the control yoke tighter, his knuckles white against the worn leather. The derelict freighter loomed before him, a skeletal silhouette against the backdrop of swirling nebula gases. A chill snaked down his spine despite the ship's artificial heat. This wasn't just another salvage job. Something about this hulking wreck emanated a sense of ancient dread, a whisper in the void that tugged at his soul.

He had heard the rumors: the 'Ghost Ship' of Sector 7, said to be haunted by the spirits of its former crew, lost decades ago in a pirate ambush. Most scavengers steered clear, dismissing it as superstitious nonsense. But Kiran was desperate. He needed the credits from this salvage run to repair his aging ship and pay off his mounting debts. The risk felt worth taking.

He nudged his ship, the 'Starfire,' closer, docking it against the derelict's rusted hull. A shudder ran through the Starfire as its clamps engaged with the aged metal, the sound echoing ominously in the cramped cockpit. Kiran took a deep breath and activated the internal airlock. He stepped onto the decaying deck of the Ghost Ship, his boots crunching on shards of broken glass and rusted machinery.

The silence was oppressive, broken only by the hiss of his respirator and the distant creak of metal groaning under the strain of its own weight. The air hung heavy with the scent of decay and something else... a metallic tang that pricked at his nostrils.

He navigated the labyrinthine corridors, passing shattered cabins, twisted machinery, and skeletal remains still clutching weapons. The ship felt impossibly cold, as if it had been sucked dry of all warmth. Shadows danced in the flickering light cast by his helmet lamp, twisting into grotesque shapes that made him jump. He tried to rationalize his fear, attributing it to the eerie atmosphere and the weight of history pressing down on him. But a nagging sense of unease persisted.

He reached the bridge, its once-proud command chairs now overturned and covered in dust. The holographic projector flickered erratically, casting distorted images across the shattered viewport. Kiran noticed something glinting in the corner: a small, metallic orb, pulsing with an ethereal blue light. It emanated a faint hum, drawing him closer.

Hesitantly, he picked it up. As soon as his fingers brushed its cold surface, visions flooded his mind. He saw flashes of carnage, a desperate struggle against pirates, and the agonizing deaths of the crew. The ship groaned under attack, its hull breached by energy blasts, flames licking at the corridors. Kiran gasped, dropping the orb, the visions vanishing as abruptly as they had appeared.

The humming stopped. A chilling silence descended, broken only by his ragged breathing.

Suddenly, he heard it: a whisper, faint but distinct, echoing through the desolate bridge. It spoke in a language he couldn't understand, but the tone was clear: mournful, filled with sorrow and longing.

He spun around, searching for the source of the voice. But there was nothing, only the empty chairs and the flickering holographic projector casting distorted shadows. The whisper came again, this time closer, a cold breath on his ear. It spoke of betrayal, of a crew left to die by their own captain, who had fled in a desperate bid for survival.

Fear gripped Kiran. He knew now why this ship was haunted. It wasn't just the violent deaths of its crew; it was the weight of unaddressed wrongs, a lingering injustice that clawed at the souls of the departed.

He stumbled back, tripping over a fallen control panel. As he fell, he caught sight of a flickering image on the holographic projector: the face of a young woman, her eyes filled with pleading sorrow. She mouthed a single word: 'Justice.'

The weight of responsibility crashed down on Kiran. He couldn't just leave these spirits to their eternal torment. He had to help them find peace.

He stood up, his fear replaced by a newfound resolve. He would uncover the truth about the Ghost Ship's demise, expose the captain's betrayal, and finally grant its tormented crew the justice they deserved.
